Family Escape: Ouarzazate

5 - Day Itinerary

Start: Ouarzazate | End: Marrakech, Fes, Ouarzazate, Tangier, Essaouira or Rabat

Day 1

Arrive in Ouarzazate, where your driver-guide welcomes you to southern Morocco. Visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah (kids love the maze-like rooms!) and the Cinema Museum, showcasing props from movies filmed in the area. After checking into your family-friendly riad, head to a relaxed dinner with mountain views.

Day 2

Today you’ll explore the famous Ait Ben Haddou, a real-life desert fortress and UNESCO site. Cross the shallow river on foot or mule, then climb to the top for panoramic views. Learn about mud-brick architecture, then enjoy a gentle camel ride nearby. After lunch with a local family, return to Ouarzazate for downtime or pool time.

Day 3

Drive to the beautiful Skoura Oasis, where palm groves stretch for miles. Visit the family-run Kasbah Amridil, then take a walk through gardens and small farms, learning how families here live off the land. Kids can try making flatbreador squeezing fresh orange juice. Enjoy a picnic lunch under the trees before returning.

Day 4

Travel through the Valley of Roses and stop for souvenirs or rosewater treats. Continue to the Todra Gorge, where towering cliffs surround a gentle river. Take an easy walk and enjoy lunch with a mountain view. Arrive in Merzouga, where camels are ready to lead you into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Watch the sunset, then gather around the fire for music, stars, and stories.

Day 5

After breakfast in the dunes, visit Khamlia village to hear live Gnawa music and sip tea with local musicians. Explore the Rissani market — a fascinating place for kids to see spices, dates, and even donkeys for sale! Families can choose to return to Ouarzazate, continue toward Fes, or stay another night in the area.

7 - Day Itinerary Extension

Day 7

Take a slower return journey with a stop in Boumalne Dades. Families can hike to monkey-finger rock formations or enjoy a cozy tagine lunch by the river. Optional visit to a carpet cooperative to see how local women weave magic with wool.
